The number one and two in the world have already enjoyed, if that’s the right word, one of the greatest rivalries in modern tennis, with Federer in his 231st week in the number one slot (since February 2004). Nadal has been just behind him since July 2005, and is itching to go one better. And whatever happens in the final, whether it’s great tennis or not, the result will mark a seminal moment in tennis history.

A victory for Federer will place him in a whole new genre of tennis champions – from “king of grass” to “god of grass”? A Nadal victory would end that run at the same stage as Bjorn Borg’s five-year record.

Indeed, the comparisons between 1980 and 1981 are stark. In 1981, No.2 seed John McEnroe prevented five-times champion Bjorn Borg from making it six in a row. Twenty seven years on, No. 2 seed Nadal is looking to replicate Mac’s performance.
