Taiwan independence is a political movement whose goals are primarily to formally establish the Republic of Taiwan by renaming the Republic of China (ROC) (commonly known as "Taiwan"), create a Taiwanese national identity, reject unification with the People's Republic of China (commonly known as "China") and a Chinese identity, and obtaining international recognition as a sovereign state. The success of this movement would be one possible outcome for the resolution of the political status of Taiwan.
